Sustainable Schools – Plan, Act, Review

A successful sustainable school will require a structured approach.

We encourage schools and their community to take a ‘plan, act and review’ approach. Tools are available on this website to help with each of these steps. Although schools may be at different stages of their sustainability journey, planning is a good place to start. Schools wishing to undertake new sustainability education, begin collaborative projects or take on larger challenges generally achieve better results when a well-thought-out planning process is adopted.

Plan – whole school approach to embedding sustainability

The site has several planning tools which cater to all schools from those starting on their journey toward sustainability through to those that are reviewing and updating existing environmental plans.

Act - supporting sustainability teaching & learning

Actions are then implemented according to the School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP).

The site supports the sustainability learning outcomes of students through:

  • student investigations and audit tools from the education centre
  • teaching program suggestions
  • working with the community.

Evidence from existing environmental education networks suggests that collegial support between teachers  implementing sustainability education programs is vital. This website provides that support through the online forum and the capacity to join  regional and local networks of schools participating in site activities.

Review – measuring, recording and celebrating our achievements

The SEMP can be integrated into the school's annual planning process, assisting schools to record and describe their sustainability achievements.

The SEMP action plans include reporting descriptions, indicators of success and the time-frames for review. This SEMP development process provides a focus for schools to celebrate before beginning a new planning cycle.

The sustainability achievements of schools can be linked to the wider community through the SEMP, including celebration and communication of important milestones for the school.
